Three big games are on the schedule for Friday with a double header from Group D as Japan and Scotland both look for needed wins, and then England tries to solve Argentina. Between those two games, Jamaica and Italy will meet in a game that could throw Group C wide open.

First up: Japan vs. Scotland. Both sides failed to win their opening matches, forcing each side to gain points quickly in order to make it out of Group D. Japan enter the match as favorites, having been finalists in the last two tournaments and champions in 2011. Scotland, on the other hand, lost to England in their first-ever World Cup match. Though the scoreline didn’t accurately represent the fight that the Scots put up against their neighbor, they must find a way to strengthen their attack to beat the Nadeshiko, FIFA’s 7th-ranked team.

Despite Japan’s past success, their current team is not as experienced as their psst teams. That inexperience saw the Asian side struggle to create against Argentina, who held out for a 0-0 draw that may be the biggest surprise of the tournament so far.

It will be interesting to see which side finds their way to the top. I predict a 2-1 victory by Japan.

The second game of the day features Jamaica vs. Italy in Group C.

Jamaica, featuring Washington Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews, put up a good fight against Brazil in their opening match, but ultimately struggled in containing Cristiane, who had a hat trick. Despite the score, however, their goalkeeper, Sydney Schneider played an incredible game. The 19-year-old goalkeeper took risks and stopped a well-taken penalty. Schneider will prove to be an asset to her country against Italy.

The European side, on the other hand, can breathe with three points after defeating Australia 2-1. Barbara Bonansea’s late game-winner will give her side confidence entering the match tomorrow. Italy has now won three back-to-back games, having won two pre-tournament friendlies.

Though Italy won their first match, I don’t believe they have the advantage. The Jamaican national team created chances and challenged Brazil until the final whistle. This time, they enter the pitch with more experience and hunger for the three points. I see a 3-1 win for Jamaica.

The last match of the day sees England facing Argentina in an intense Group D face-off.

Despite England’s victory against Scotland, the European side cannot be too quick to celebrate as they very narrowly escaped a draw. Phil Neville’s side has the offensive talent to dismantle opponents like Scotland, but they struggled. One can understand that they might be off their first game, but in this tournament, one mistake can send you home.

Instead of opting for an attacking strategy like England, Argentina utilized a defensive structure to get their result against Japan. This time, however, Argentina will have to rethink their defensive manners, as England’s attack far outweighs Japan’s. Should the South American side use their same tactic, England will have an easy time maneuvering through to the goal.

After their narrow victory, England will be more aware than ever about small mistakes, therefore I predict a 1-0 victory over Argentina.
