Real Betis, Washington Spirit callups, and more: Freedom Kicks for 23 May 2019

Soccer, go!

MLS: Friendly-Real Betis at D.C. United Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The first of three summer friendlies are behind us, and now D.C. United has another three games in a week stretch to launch us into the Gold Cup break. It will be a sudden stop to the season, though there will be a US Open Cup match in there somewhere, and a place to catch our breath and watch the USMNT play their first competitive games since the disaster in 2017.

Are you ready for it? Yeah, me neither.

To the links!

Despite Griffin Yow goal, D.C. United drops 5-2 friendly decision to Real Betis - Black And Red United: It was great to see Chris Odoi-Atsem and Griffin Yow do well last night, even if the results did not go the way that we wanted.

Spirit Stories: Sam Staab - Washington Spirit: Washington Spirit rookie starter Sam Staab talks about the draft and the beginning of her professional career.

Washington Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews named to Jamaica’s 2019 World Cup squad - Black And Red United: The Washington Spirit get their fifth call-up to various World Cup squads; congrats to all attending!

Chad Marshall announces retirement - Sounder At Heart: This retirement, combined with DeMarcus Beasley’s, seems like the passing of an era of MLS.

These are very good.

And yes, D.C. United will have them as well!

After getting his coaching start with D.C. United, Josh Wolff seems to be a quickly rising star in the coaching ranks. I would love to see him get a head coaching job, but Colorado right before his first Gold Cup on the USMNT staff was never gonna happen.

That’s all I’ve got. What’s up?
