D.C. & Loudoun United lose, alumni news & more: Freedom Kicks for 4/29/19

Also, a late entry to the masses of Deadwood lovers.

Well that was not fun.

Recaps of D.C. United’s 1-0 loss to Minnesota United FC from us, WaPo, Flo and MLS. E Pluribus Loonum has the Minny Nice side of things. Speaking of them, this pic for your judgment:

Perseverance Award: Audi Field (WBJ): So the guy who was the lawyer for the team remembers when Phil Anschutz started trying to work on a stadium in D.C.. THAT’S how long it’s been.

Olsen Still Kicking As D.C. United Head Coach (On Tap): This one is a little post-dated, but if you like Ben Olsen bio pieces, etc etc

Loudoun United beaten in extra time 1-0 (us): Ah well, twas a game.

Now for a segment I’ll call (cups hands around mouth) “ONCE AND FUTURE DC PLAYERS...”, starting with

Lyon intéressé par Gallardo pour le poste d’entraîneur (L’Equipe): Apparently Lyon (a Luciano Acosta suitor) have an interest in Marcelo Gallardo, so that would potentially double the amount of former DC players from Argentina at one club I guess.

Ludwig’s 8-year-old knows a Hall of Famer when she sees one (Philly.com): Dennis Ludwig was drafted in the 2002 MLS Draft and played a season with D.C., and is now being inducted into the South Jersey Soccer Hall of Fame. Good for him. And his daughter!

Ssejjemba named men’s soccer coach at Wayland Baptist (Victory Sports Network): Robert Ssejjemba was signed as a trialist for D.C. United in 2006. He’s a soccer coach now.

Asheville family begins professional soccer dream together (Asheville Citizen): Am only bringing this to your attention as D.C. is bringing in UNC-Asheville’s men’s soccer coach’s son to the U15s, but also the whole thing of looking in non-traditional regions for players.

Riverhounds SC rookies enjoying fans, being professionals and Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Soccer Now): Speaking of the Academy, a former Academy player talks about his current USL career.

Tulsa Roughnecks’ Bastidas has contract terminated after racist abuse accusation (ESPN): Good on the USL and Tulsa.

Leeds United 1-1 Aston Villa: Chaos reigns as Villa hold off Leeds (7500 to Holte): In the Championship, hoboy, some craziness Sunday.

‘Deadwood’ Rides Again (Rolling Stone): Lots of people have talked about this show for awhile and with a relatively quiet TV watching period, I figured I’d start to give it a look for the first time ahead of its movie last month and boy howdy, I can see why. This look at the film and its creator is a great read.

Anyway, go forth and keep teeth gnashing to a minimum.
