Tales from Buzzard Point XVII: Fear Buzzard Point

This is the seventeenth in a series of Tales from Buzzard Point that explores the rich history and traditions of legendary Buzzard Point – a legacy that the current DC United ownership may have set aside in selling naming rights for the new soccer specific stadium but is forever enshrined in the chants, songs, and hearts of Black and Red fandom.

[Note: As a Fanpost I am unable to put up the two photos what are important to this Tales from Buzzard Point. Any technical advice on how to do so would be appreciated.]

For many years I have been a faithful reader of The Evening Star, which, as the B&RU Commentariat knows, has been the news source for many Tales from Buzzard Point. In the lead-up to DC United’s match against visiting Real Salt Lake this Saturday, the following brief news story caught my eye.

Mysterious New Message Frames Mormon Temple Again

Beltway drivers going west have long been delighted by the rising white spires of the Mormon Temple just beyond the Georgia Avenue exit. Veteran commuters have chuckled at the memory of the message painted on the railway bridge framing the view of its fairy tale architecture: "Surrender Dorothy," invoking L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Despite the best efforts of the Maryland Department of Transportation to paint over the message, it has mysteriously reappeared through the years.

This week commuters have been greeted by a new message on the railroad bridge framing the view of the Mormon Temple: "Fear Buzzard Point." Buzzard Point is DC’s oldest neighborhood (ca. 1673) and home to DC United’s new soccer stadium. Buzzard Point will host the match between DC United and Real Salt Lake this Saturday at 8 pm.

A DC United spokesperson denied any knowledge of how the message had appeared but assured The Evening Star that the warning could only have been directed at the Real Salt Lake team itself and not at visiting fans.

"Of whatever race, age, gender, creed, national origin, or sexual orientation, Buzzard Point welcomes all ... except Red Bull fans."

Series Editor’s postscript: "Tales from Buzzard Point" includes historical fiction and homage or parody. All members of the B&RU Commentariat are invited to submit manuscripts of their own researches into the history and traditions of Buzzard Point to davidrusk@verizon.net . All proposed tales must a) involve Buzzard Point, b) have some relationship to football/soccer, and c) demonstrate that Buzzard Point is hallowed ground for DC United and that our MLS opponents are doomed to never come away from Buzzard Point with a result.
