D.C. United midfielder Paul Arriola has been selected as part of the United States 24-man roster for upcoming friendlies with Brazil in East Rutherford, New Jersey on September 7 and Mexico in Nashville on September 11. Arriola’s only other appearance for the Yanks was in a January friendly with Bosnia Herzegovina, appearing in the second half of a scoreless draw. There was a surprise when Arriola was not included on the US roster for May and June friendlies, though Arriola admitted to Yahoo’s Doug McIntyre recently his form was lacking, and this was before a positional shift from right to central midfield.
For the Black-and-Red, Arriola is added to a list that includes Junior Moreno and Zoltan Stieber (announced as previous call-ups to Venezuela and Hungary, respectively), and potentially may include Darren Mattocks and Oniel Fisher for Jamaica. The potential quintet would miss Saturday’s away game with New York City FC and could serve in limited duty at home on September 12 against Minnesota United FC.
