The 2018 World Cup knockout stage begins today with Round of 16 action. Now that the group stage is done, it’s win or go home for the remaining teams. First up, Group D winner France will take on Group C runner-up Argentina in an epic matchup that many probably thought wouldn’t be possible until the final. They will meet the winner of Uruguay and Portugal, two team who played pretty well at times during the group stage and also have their own stars to carry the day.

France vs. Argentina

What to watch for: Which Argentina team will we see? Will it be the one that we saw sludge through the group stage and almost fail to qualify for the 2nd round, or one where the team comes together and plays up to their star-studded potential? On the French side, they have been one of the better teams in the tournament. Can Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe, and Antoine Griezmann continues their successful ways?

Uruguay vs. Portugal

What to watch for: Cristiano Ronaldo has led Portugal, for the most part, throughout the group stage. Will he be able to continue to carry the team on his back, or will he receive some help? Uruguay began clicking in their match against Russia, but this will easily be the best team they’ve faced thus far in Portugal. Can Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and La Celeste demonstrate that they are a team that has the strength to go all the way?
