D.C. United’s April trip to face Toronto FC moved to June

The Reds are trying to boost their CONCACAF Champions League hopes, so United won’t be at BMO Field until the summer

Earlier today, D.C. United announced that their upcoming game at Toronto FC, which was originally scheduled for April 7, has been moved to Wednesday, June 13th at 8:00pm. The move allows for TFC to better prepare for their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal fixtures with Liga MX side Club America. Originally the Black-and-Red’s date in Canada was in between the Reds’ hosting of Las Aguilas on April 3 and their date at Estadio Azteca on April 10.

For D.C. this means that after coming off a date in Cascadia with the Seattle Sounders, they will play the Reds possibly without midfielder Ulises Segura (who has a chance to be part of Costa Rica’s squad for the World Cup). TFC, meanwhile, stand to lose nobody for World Cup duty (thanks Michael Bradley & Jozy Altidore!). United’s World Cup break was going to be a full three weeks, which they might need as this date change has left June rather crowded. On top of the existing trip to Seattle, the fourth round of the US Open Cup will fall during the first week of June, making this trip to Toronto likely the third game in a week for the Black-and-Red.

How United, TFC, and/or MLS handles the move as far as traveling fans go remains to be seen. At least one fan planned to travel to Canada for the original date, and based on past history it’s safe to expect a couple dozen fans to have made the trip north.
