The Washington Post’s Steve Goff is reporting that D.C. United will have some representation in the United States national team camp later this month. Paul Arriola’s inclusion was unsurprising, and Russell Canouse was a welcome addition to the USMNT’s January squad. The third name was perhaps the biggest surprise as homegrown player Ian Harkes got a call-up from interim manager Dave Sarachan. The younger Harkes follows in the footsteps of his father, former U.S. captain John Harkes.
This is the second consecutive year that three United players are part of the January camp; Bill Hamid, Steve Birnbaum, and Taylor Kemp were in the 2017 California training period. Arriola (22), Canouse (22), and Harkes (23) were new additions to D.C. United’s squad in 2017, and Canouse and Harkes will receive their first looks at the full national team level.
The full roster is expected later today, with the only game scheduled for January 28 at StubHub Center in California against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
