Last night, the Washington Spirit clinched a home-field semifinal butunfortunately rookie Cali Farquharson won’t be playing in it. The Spirit forward injured her knee two minutes into Wednesday’s match, and the club confirmed yesterday that she suffered a torn ACL.

Farquharson will miss the remainder of the season and since the roster freeze is in effect, the Spirit won’t be able to replace her. Forward Laura del Río sustained a season-ending injury earlier this season and Estefania Banini is currently out after undergoing an arthroscopic knee surgery. Banini is projected to return during the post-season but until then the Spirit will have limited options up top. Crystal Dunn, Cheyna Williams, and Francisca Ordega are a strong attacking trio but the Spirit will need to either push Diana Matheson up top or experiment with other options towards the end of games.

“We all feel terrible for Cali, she has developed considerably in her rookie season. We are confident that she will come back stronger than ever,” said Spirit head coach Jim Gabarra in a club press release.
