Fantasy Focus: Alberg Slim

Hands up if you saw this coming.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

We have a new overall leader in the league, but Otten's Army set the pace this week with 99 points. Chris Pontius (PHI, $7.3) wore the armband and scored 22 points with one goal. Backing him up, Diego Valeri (POR, $11.0) scored twice and added an assist for 18 points, and Lamar Neagle (DCU, $8.0) tallied 12 points on a goal and an assist. Our new league leader is Salisbury United, with an 8-point lead.

Positional Leaders

Goalkeepers

LA's Brian Rowe ($4.8) scored 14 points with a clean sheet over two games. Bill Hamid (DCU, $6.3) scored 9 points on a clean sheet, and Zac MacMath (COL, $5.4) duplicated that feat for 8 points.

Defenders

A trio of players led the defenders with 13 points -- DCU's Sean Franklin ($8.4), Ronald Matarrita (NYC, $7.9), and Gideon Baah (NYR, $8.2). Franklin and Matarrita each paired a clean sheet with a goal, while Baah only had a goal in the Red Bulls' two matches. The rest of United's defense featured Jalen Robinson ($4.7) with 10 points, Taylor Kemp ($8.1) with 7, and Kofi Opare ($5.6) with 5.

Midfielders

Roland Alberg (PHI, $8.4) scored a hat trick in one game and one more goal in another for 28 points, leading all forwards and all players. Diego Valeri's 13 points were second, and Kevin Molino (ORL, $8.4) came in with 13 points on two assists. D.C.'s midfield was led by Lamar Neagle's 12 points, followed by Marcelo Sarvas ($7.3) with 9, Nick DeLeon ($6.4) with 3, and the pair of Jared Jeffrey ($5.5) and Rob Vincent ($6.0) with 1 each.

Forwards

Dom Dwyer (SKC, $10.0) scored a brace for 13 points, leading all forwards. The pair of Giovani dos Santos (LA, $11.5) and Lucas Melano (POR, $8.8) scored a goal apiece for 11 points. Luciano Acosta ($8.6) was one of four DCU forwards to score with 6 points, while Alvaro Saborio ($7.8) returned with 5, Fabian Espindola ($10.0) had 2, and Alhaji Kamara ($8.5) had 1.

Looking Ahead

New England and NYCFC play twice, and everyone else plays once. This round goes thru Wednesday, July 6th, and games start on Friday, July 1st. I'd be wary of investing too much in two-game guys, especially NYCFC because they may rotate guys like David Villa, Frank Lampard, and Andrea Pirlo with two games in 4 days, one of which is against the rival Red Bulls. I like Tim Melia (SKC, $5.5) in goal at home against Columbus, and RJ Allen (NYC, $5.4) in defense at home against the Red Bulls and at New England. Lee Nguyen (NE, $11.8) is a good bet in midfield @ Montreal and at home against NYC, and at forward I like Cyle Larin (ORL, $9.5) @ Dallas.
