Freedom Kicks: D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and other links for Friday August 28, 2015

New, 12 comments

Bill Hamid and Crystal Dunn star, and a man probably saved the world in a literal sense.

I'm subbing for touchline today, and like all subs I plan to show videos as long as everyone behaves.

MLS Insider: DC United goalkeeper Bill Hamid goes from humble upbringing to MLS star | MLSsoccer.com
This is a fantastic 10 minute feature on Bill Hamid's path from being one of those kids you see kicking a ball around in Lot 8 before D.C. United games to being the club's star player. If you only have time for one of these links, this is the one to click.

Timeline: The top 10 moments that shaped the New York Red Bulls-DC United Atlantic Cup rivalry
I don't necessarily agree with these being the 10 items - the Snow Game should be a separate incident in my book from the next day's game - but this is mostly fun. I feel like the balance of good memories/bad memories should be 70% in DCU's favor though, what with the decades of dominance and all.

Costa Rica mantiene base mundialista para fogueos con Uruguay y Brasil | LaInformacion.com
It looks like Alvaro Saborio has been called up by Costa Rica for their friendlies on September 5th and 11th, though I will note that the team hasn't confirmed this yet (and this list includes some errors, like Everton being a French club). Still, it seems entirely realistic that Sabo will be called up as a) he's a regular member of the squad and b) United has no games that weekend anyway. He'll be back in time for the trip to Colorado on the 12th.

Washington Spirit clinches NWSL playoff berth for 2nd straight year | Washington Post
Damn right. Last night's somewhat uneventful - bar a FCKC flurry with about 10 minutes to go - 0-0 draw put the Spirit in the playoffs with 2 games to play. In fact, the result sealed the four playoff clubs (the Spirit will be joined by the Seattle Reign, the Chicago Red Stars, and FC Kansas City).

The order is still up in the air, and Washington is in a decent position to earn themselves a home game in the semifinals. They have the tiebreaker over the Red Stars, while FCKC has just one game to play.

Washington Spirit's Crystal Dunn only getting better | ESPNW
Speaking of the NWSL, all hail the soon-to-be MVP. And credit Graham Hays for talking about how Crystal Dunn made her most recent game-winning goal happen by sprinting as hard as she could after what looked initially like a hopeless long ball.

Copa America Centenario will be played, but maybe not with CONCACAF or in the USA | Stars and Stripes FC
Can't say I'm surprised to see this become questionable given that this great idea was unfortunately cooked up by some dudes looking for bribes. Life is complicated.

Pretty Good, episode 4: The night a Soviet officer saved all our asses
Jon Bois has been doing some fantastic work in his Pretty Good series, and this one may be the best yet. I'd read about Lt. Col. Stanislav Petrov - precocious 80s kid grows up to devour Cold War history, story at 11 - but that happened with Episode 2 of Pretty Good and I still loved the video. Anyway, if you're in Moscow and you run into Petrov, maybe buy him a drink.

The Scorcese in "Boogie Nights" | One Perfect Shot
If you haven't drawn the ire of your boss yet for loafing by reading links and watching videos yet, here's another link that leads to another video. "Boogie Nights" is a fantastic film, but it owes a lot to Martin Scorcese as we see here.
