Finding Women's Soccer in the D.C. Area

With the World Cup winding down, where should you go to get your women's soccer fix?

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 Women's World Cup has been entertaining, with plenty of great goals, thrilling build up play, and dramatic endings. Unfortunately the end of the tournament is closing in, and you may be looking for more ways to watch women's soccer. Thankfully there are quite a few options across multiple leagues in the D.C. metro area.

Washington Spirit

League: National Women's Soccer League
Home Venue: Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland Soccerplex

The Washington Spirit finished their 2014 season with a 2-1 semifinal loss to the Seattle Reign, which was a remarkable turnaround from their last place finish in the inaugural NWSL season in 2013. They're currently tied for second place while awaiting the return of the World Cup stars.

At the stadium, you'll find a beer garden behind the south goal, and the you'll find the Spirit Squadron singing and chanting in the stands opposite the benches. Merchandise and concessions can be found behind the stands.

Now competing in their fourth season, ACF Torino USA is a stand-alone women's program, one of few in the area. They're managed by former player Jessica Jach, who played collegiately at San Diego State before eventually joining Torino.

The surface at Riverdale Baptist Sportsplex is turf and is also used for football. The WPSL regular season is short, so opportunities to see Torino are fleeting. In addition to their one remaining home date, they play at cross-state divisional rival ASA Charge on 7/12.
