D.C. United vs. Orlando City SC preview: Throwback Thursday - Looking all the way back at the first meeting at the Citrus Bowl

New, comments

Today's #TBT is digging deep, deep into the archives.

As we all know, Orlando City SC is a team with a rich and deep history, and their rivalry with D.C. United goes back decades years months. I generally like to focus each week's Throwback Thursday video on the same fixture - this week's being United visiting the Lions, and for the first time in the history of this matchup, I've got a past meeting to work with. So let's look all the way back at April of this year, to the first ever meeting between OCSC and los Capitalinos.

It should still be fresh enough in all our minds, but for those who don't remember, Bill Hamid stood on his head to keep Kaka & Co. off the board, while Luis Silva made his return from injury as a second half sub to provide an early glimpse at the late-game drama that would define so many of the Black-and-Red's matches this season. Not appearing back in April was crippling, unnecessary fixture congestion, and that should be the case again this weekend, as United enjoyed a seemingly rare full week's rest between games. (Of course, they'll visit Pittsburgh next Wednesday in U.S. Open Cup play, but that doesn't really compare to 5 league games on two coasts in 15 days.)

What stands out to you from our last visit to the Sunshine State? What lessons should Ben Olsen and his side take into Sunday night's tilt?
