Speculating on D.C. United's CCL dates

Thanks to CCL teams releasing their schedules and other stuff, we slowly get to schedule-bate on when D.C. may play their Group games.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The fine folks at RSL Soapbox managed to get their hands on some of their dates for the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League tournament, but then Real Salt Lake decided to tweet out the windows for CCL games:

So, putting these things together and putting them against D.C. United's schedule, let's examine these baselessly, huh?

  • 8/4-8/6: In play, but with a caveat. D.C. plays that preceding Saturday at home (against Real Salt Lake, coincidentally enough) and travels the following Saturday to play the Montreal Impact. In fact, they stay in the Eastern time zone for almost two months (after 7/18 at F.C. Dallas and before 9/12 at the Colorado Rapids), so perhaps trying to sneak in the longest road trip to play Arabe Unido is conceivable.

About the caveat: this window might depend on how D.C. does/continues to do in the U.S. Open Cup. If they manage to beat the Philadelphia Union next week then there may be some planning involved just in case D.C. gets to the semifinals, which are August 11th and 12th. And so you'd have all three competitions to game for. Ben Olsen might want to take the easy out if that were the case, and lean more towards...
  • 8/18-8/20: In play for many of the same reasons, if not moreso. D.C. is at New York City FC on 8/13 (a Thursday) and then hosts the San Jose Earthquakes 8/22.
  • 8/24-8/26: Do-able (the aforementioned San Jose game on 8/22 and then a road game to play the New York Red Bulls on 8/30), particularly as a home date.
  • 9/13-9/15: Perhaps the most pliable. D.C. plays at the Colorado Rapids on 9/12 and hosts Columbus Crew SC on 9/19. There's the chance that Olsen may punt the Rapids game, play a B squad and be happy with a road game in Panama or Jamaica that could be cinched with a stronger squad, especially if the Rapids are still in contention for the Wooden Spoon at that point.
  • 9/22-9/24: Mostly because of the reasons of the first window, since the U.S. Open Cup Final is 9/29
  • 10/20-10/22: Perhaps the most definitive. In between hosting the Chicago Fire and going on the road to play Columbus, and could be only the fourth match of the month for the club? No way they don't do this.

So, if I was running CONCACAF logistics for the team (and I'm totally not), my best guess is D.C.'s match dates may shake out to 8/26, 9/15 (away), 9/23 and 10/21 (away).

We'll continue to update things as we find them, scouring any Panamanian or Jamaican social media channel we can find, or meeting folks at the Days Inn in Lanham (room 202, ask for Mr. Chin). But for now, that's what we got.
