Freedom Kicks: D.C. United and MLS links for Wednesday July 30th, 2014

D.C. United plays TFC tonight, MLS teams are making trades, and a tornado tried to destroy Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Yup, just another day of Freedom Kicks.

Only you, Philadelphia Union. Only you.
Only you, Philadelphia Union. Only you.

I spent a good portion of yesterday in a car and/or working on the scouting report that you will see in a few hours after this goes up, so this edition of Freedom Kicks is pretty much a "just the facts, ma'am" edition.

Talking Strategy: D.C. United vs Toronto FC |
Davy Arnaud and Steve Birnbaum don't reveal any state secrets here, but they do acknowledge that a) this is kind of a big game and b) tracking runners against a team with Jermain Defoe is important.

D.C. United on pace for MLS-record turnaround, but Ben Olsen isn’t boasting yet | Washington Post
Steve Goff checks in with United before tonight's game and finds that they're not ready to rest on their laurels. He also went to the friendly at FedEx last night, but we paid our dues on friendlies over the weekend and we have real soccer to discuss here rather than training exercises.

Here's the league site's preview of the game. Tonight's ref: Chris Penso. We had Geiger in the friendly, ugh! I said I didn't want to talk about friendlies, and here we are.

LA Galaxy trade Kofi Opare for no. 3 spot in Allocation Ranking | LAG Confidential
Here's the Galaxy perspective on yesterday's trade from our main damies at LAG Confidential.

Galaxy ready to add a name player after dealing away best young defender | Soccerly
Scott French is an Opare fan, and is also speculating on who the Galaxy wants to sign. Maybe they just want to sign new free agent Ronaldinho, for funsies. French brings up Diskerud, which makes me want to say "Hands off!" but I'm pretty sure #LongHairDon'tCare is a pipe dream for us. And now I'm sad.

Philadelphia Union Announce "Major" Announcement For Tomorrow At Noon; It's Speculation Time! | The Brotherly Game
The Union have a young starting GK with at least some promise, and traded up to take another young GK who has already appeared for Jamaica's national team, and would have homegrown rights to Maryland Terrapins keeper Zack Steffen, who is among the most highly-touted GK prospects in recent memory. So naturally, they appear to have gone out and signed Rais M'bolhi, Algeria's #1 from this past World Cup. Union gonna Union.

Tornado touches down close to Colorado Rapids' Dick's Sporting Goods Park, injures none |
So this happened, and it gives me a chance to give the short version of my own tornado story: One passed through the Maryland at College Park campus in 2001, but I was down the hall in the bathroom as it approached. My window was open, and my bed was next to the window. I came in to my roommate standing on my bed frantically trying to shut the window to keep our fan from being sucked outside (which happened to about 10 fans in our building). My mattress had dirt, branches, and general grit in it for the rest of the semester. I never found out why my roommate waited until a tornado was like 50 yards from the building to shut the damn window.

Now that I'm done with that bit of self-indulgent nostalgia, I'll shut up and leave the comments to you.
