The two favorites won their games yesterday, but were held until the waning minutes of the game: France dispatched Nigeria, and Germany needed extra time to get past Algeria. Today, two teams who were tipped as pre-tournament favorites take on two teams looking to make the upset happen. Our first game, however, has the bigger favorite to win the entire tournament, as well as the bigger underdog. Oh, and there is also the best player in the world. And don't worry, America fans: we will have a USA open thread later today.
Argentina vs. Switzerland
Kickoff time: 12:00 PM EDT
Venue: Arena Corinthians, São Paulo
Cliff's notes: Argentina is widely considered one of the favorites of this tournament, especially since Brazil have looked so poor so far. They also have this guy named Lionel Messi that you may have heard of. Switzerland got blown out by France in their first game, but got results against Ecuador and Honduras to ensure their place in the round of sixteen.
Who should I root for? Argentina if you want to root for chalk and the best possible teams for the final, Switzerland if you prefer chaos. I will go will go with chalk.
As always, this is your place for any and all pre-game, in-game, and post-game commentary. And don't forget to not eat waffles.
