Fantasy Focus: Back With a Vengeance

Alvaro Saborio made a big splash after missing four matches, two teams shine on defense, and one D.C. United position comes up entirely empty

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Our own Handsome Boys SC scored 75 points to lead the league this round. Nathan Sturgis (COL, $4.7M) captained the side and scored 14 points. His Rapids teammate Dillon Powers ($6.3M) scored a goal and earned an assist to score 12 points. Three other players scored seven points -- Chris Klute (COL, $5.4M), Diego Fagundez (NE, $6.8M), and Mike Magee (CHI, $9.6M). No teams changed places among the top 5, so SGV Galaxy still leads, and has extended that lead to 33 points.

Positional Leaders

Goalkeepers

Stifle your laughter, but Zac MacMath (PHI, $5.0) scored 10 points to lead all GKs. Montreal's Troy Perkins ($5.0) scored 8 points, and Clint Irwin (COL, $5.1) scored 7 to round out the top three. DCU's Joe Willis ($4.9M) scored 3 points.

Defenders

San Jose's Victor Bernardez ($5.7M) earned 10 points to lead the defenders. Behind him, three players scored 8 points -- Drew Moor (COL, $5.4M), Jeb Brovsky (MTL, $4.3M), and Matteo Ferrari (MTL, $4.6M). All told, of the 10 players that scored 7 or 8 points, 7 of them were either Colorado or Montreal defenders. Impressive. Unimpressive, on the other hand, was D.C. United. James Riley ($4.5M), Daniel Woolard ($3.9M), and Dejan Jakovic ($5.2M) scored 3 points each, and Taylor Kemp ($4.3M) scored 1.

Midfielders

Dillon Powers's 12 points was good to lead all midfielders. Rapids teammate Hendry Thomas ($5.8M) was one of five players scoring 9 points, with the others being Brandon Barklage (NY, $5.2M), Shea Salinas (SJ, $7.7M), Bobby Convey (TOR, $7.0M), and Luis Silva (DCU, $7.1M). The rest of the United midfield followed with John Thorrington($5.3M) scoring 8 points, Nick DeLeon ($7.4M) scoring 3, and Dwayne De Rosario ($9.3M), Sainey Nyassi ($5.6M), Kyle Porter ($4.8M), and Jared Jeffrey ($6.0M) scoring 1 each.

Forwards

Alvaro Saborio (RSL, $9.8M) returned from his Gold Cup break and scored a hat trick to earn 17 points. His former teammate and Saturday opponent, Fabian Espindola (NY, $8.2M) scored 12 points, and both Dimitriy Imbongo (NE, $5.8M) and Steven Lenhart (SJ, $8.2M) scored 8 points. Zero D.C. players registered any points this week. Conor Doyle is not yet in the database, and he started, but wasn't available for selection. Lionard Pajoy ($7.8M) entered the match as a sub, but he fluffed a big chance, so his 1 point for playing was canceled out.

Looking Ahead

Los Angeles is the only team on bye, and all other teams play once. Bobby Shuttleworth (NE, $5.4M) allowed a softy to Luis Silva last match, but he's at home vs. TOR. Also consider Troy Perkins @ DCU. NE and MTL defenders are obvious choices here as well, but don't forget Rodney Wallace (POR, $5.1M) vs. VAN. In the midfield, Sebastien Le Toux (PHI, $8.4M) has scored 30 points in 5 matches despite only notching 1 goal and 1 assist over that stretch. At forward, Marco Di Vaio (MTL, $8.9M) is a good bet to score against DC, and if you hate yourself, Erick Torres (CHV, $7.0M) has scored in each of his first 2 MLS matches, totaling 13 points over that stretch.
