15 years ago today, D.C. United beat Vasco da Gama 2-0 to win the Copa Interamericana, which pitted the champions of North American against the champions of South America. United qualified for the Cup by beating Toluca in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, still the only time an MLS team has beaten a Mexican team to win a confederation title. Vasco da Gama qualified via their victory in the Copa Libertadores, and after this game went on to participate in the Intercontinental Cup (which they lost 2-1 to Real Madrid) and the Club World Championship (in which they lost the final 1-0 to Corinthians).
After losing the first leg of the Copa Interamericana 1-0 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in front of 25,000 fans, the team's chances in the return leg looked bleak. However, a 2-0 victory in Fort Lauderdale, with goals scored by Tony Sanneh and Eddie Pope, gave D.C. United (and MLS) the only intercontinental title in the history of the league.
