U.S. Men's National Team manager Jurgen Klinsmann has released his roster for the annual January training camp, and he's included one - just one - D.C. United player. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid will be flying to California this weekend for Monday's first day of camp. There, he'll be competing against the likes of Tally Hall and Sean Johnson for the starting gig in the international friendly against Canada in Houston on January 29.
Of course, there are going to be some of us fans of the Black-and-Red who are less than happy at seeing the likes of Nick DeLeon and Perry Kitchen being left off. But the biggest omission, from a D.C. perspective, has to be MLS Best XI midfielder Chris Pontius, who will be sitting another January camp out with an injury:
Appreciate all the support peeps. Pulled myself out of this camp cause groin isn't 100%. Need to be ready for MLS season
— Chris Pontius (@ChrisPontius13) January 6, 2013
Recall that a groin injury forced Pontius to come out of the Eastern Conference Final first leg back in November - coincidentally, at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium. After watching Pontius limp off the field in that game - and (warning: non-soccer reference) after watching RGIII limp off the field today - I can't say I see any fault with Pontius playing this one safe.
