In a press release today, D.C. United announced that central defender Dejan Jakovic has been called in by the Canadian National Team for his service for two upcoming World Cup Qualifying matches. Jakovic will join the team for its matches against Cuba on Oct. 12 and against Honduras on Oct. 16.
The good news is that United doesn't have any matches during this time frame. Jakovic will depart after the Oct. 6 match against Toronto FC and return prior to the Oct. 20 match against the Columbus Crew.
The bad news is... HEY! EFF YOU CANADA! You already cost us our most important player in Dwayne De Rosario, and now you're going to take away our best defender from training with his team during the stretch run towards the playoffs? And you're going to take him right at the point where he's finally reaching the potential that we always thought he might eventually reach?
Jakovic hasn't been much of a regular for Canada, so the chances of us losing him to injury might not be as high as they were with DeRo (knock on wood!), but its still a risk nonetheless. Its a risk that's going to cause me to specifically root against Canada to qualify for the next round of the CONCACAF hexagonal. Because I don't want to have to worry about losing our two Canadians next year too.
