When the clock turned 12:00 on Jan. 1, a new year began, and your vacation schedule from work reset. Now that the 2012 D.C. United schedule has been released, it’s time to start making some vacation plans.
With the new unbalanced format of the 34-game schedule, United will play three games against some regional opponents, two games against a few other Eastern Conference foes, but just one game against each Western Conference team. For example, the only match United will play against the 2011 MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy will be Mar. 18, while they face the newly formed Montreal Impact three times. United will also play three games against the Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, New England Revolution, New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, and Toronto FC.
United will begin the 2012 season in a way eerily similar to how the 2011 season ended – against Sporting Kansas City at RFK Stadium. Hopefully this time the result won’t be a 1-0 loss. But then in an interesting scheduling mix, four of United’s first five games will be against teams in the Western Conference. So once again, in a way, United will have "games in hand" against most of its other conference members for a good portion of the season.
D.C. will be on national television 12 times this season, including five on the brand new NBC Sports Network.
