Steve Goff says that Eric Vernan - first choice for Jamaica at right back throughout the Gold Cup - is on trial with DC United. So who is Vernan? He's a 24 year old that has played more often at right midfield than right back, but whose long-term future at higher levels probably depends on him transitioning to a defensive role successfully. Vernan did well for Jamaica when they were playing aggressively in the group stage, but struggled (like the rest of the Jamaican defense did) against the US in Jamaica's 541 bunker set-up. However, it's not often that you get a player with 27 caps at this young age who also has 2 seasons of experience in Europe. Sure, his club Nybergsund was in the 2nd division for both seasons, but it still speaks to his ability to contribute in a more demanding environment in terms of media pressure.
