I revealed my D.C. United protection list for the MLS expansion draft yesterday, and its the same list that I presented to the SB Nation editors ahead of today's mock draft.
While some of you were worried about my decisions to leave Branko Boskovic, Charlie Davies, Joe Willis, and Blake Brettschneider exposed for the expansion draft, Kevin McCauley went in a different direction when picking on behalf of the fake Montreal Impact. He picked United midfielder Austin Da Luz.
Kevin's explanation: Yet another pick made on the basis of youth and finances. Da Luz is only 24 years old and proved that he's a solid MLS left winger during this season with DC. There aren't a whole lot of solid left-footed left wingers who can cross, so Da Luz is certainly worth a roster place for almost any team in the league, especially at his current base salary of $42,000.
As United fans, we're all hoping not to lose any players, and that still seems like the likeliest possibility. But I think most of us would agree that losing Da Luz wouldn't be too terrible of a development.
Other players selected by McCauley during the mock MLS expansion draft: Paolo Cardozo, Mike Fucito, Michael Harrington, Dax McCarty, Ryan Cochrane, Jake Gleeson, Ellis McLoughlin, Daniel Paladini, and Chris Wingert.
