SI.com and Daily Soccer Fix writer Steve Davis is awfully critical of Kevin Payne and D.C. United these days. Rightfully so, I would say. Payne's statement to United players that they need to know "what it means to play in the United shirt" is off base this time around. If United's problem was that their players were all individualistic - if they were taking long shots, passing up opportunities to set up their teammates - then the playing for the shirt comment would be accurate. It's not that they don't play for the shirt. It's that they're not good enough. Changing the coach was a good step. But there's more that needs to change for D.C. United to get back to being successful.
