United release Josh Wicks

In a move that has been rumored for much of the preseason, DC United and their 2009 starting goalkeeper parted ways today. Wicks has been out with multiple injuries since September, and had already lost his starting job to Troy Perkins. But I had been counting on Wicks to bring a new level of competition back to the practice field when returning from injury. My worry is that Perkins feels too comfortable with his role. He needs someone else who is capable of starting in MLS like Wicks to push him to be better. After Perkins' acquisition, I've been consistently saying that Josh Wicks would be one of the best backup goalkeepers in the league. My guess though is that a backup role wasn't going to be good enough for him. Yes, I have a feeling that this split was mutual. Wicks is definitely good enough to start for most USL/NASL teams, and we wish him luck in continuing his career.
