D.C. United are incredibly fortunate in one on-field department: goalkeeper. Not only do the Black-and-Red have a young USMNT prospect to start in Bill Hamid and a guy who might be the best #3 GK in all of MLS in Andrew Dykstra, they've got a solid 'keeper in between them. That man is Joe Willis.
Willis manned the nets for United during their run to the U.S. Open Cup (before being displaced by Hamid for the final), helping Ben Olsen's side salvage something from an otherwise historically awful season and stood in for Hamid while the first choice 'keeper was with the USMNT for Gold Cup duty. That stretch was somewhat (read: very much) less successful than the Open Cup run.
That's kind of the book on Willis so far in his career: He's been money in short appearances like coming in for a red carded Bill Hamid or single-game stints in the USOC. But over longer appearances, his mistakes come through more and more often. So today, we decide whether Joe Willis should stick around as a member of D.C. United next year. If you think he should be back in Black-and-Red, then give him cake. If not, then death. And after you vote, be sure to share your thoughts on Willis in the comments.
