I know this isn't the most appropriate place to discuss global politics, but when gross human rights violations are carried out in the name of our beautiful game, I feel like action must be taken.
After reading Deadspin's recent report on the death of 400 migrant workers in Qatar in preparation for the 2022 World Cup, I became sick to my stomach. This is a situation where action needs to be taken, and I think we all recognize that FIFA isn't going to be proactive in resolving the problem. So I wrote to the Office of the White House and have started a petition to have the Obama Administration urge the US Soccer Federation to boycott the 2022 World Cup unless the hosting rights are revoked from Qatar and the bidding process is reopened. No matter what your thoughts of this administration are, I hope that we can all come together in agreement that action must be taken against both those in Qatar responsible for creating the terrible working conditions, and the FIFA executive board who will sit idly by while thousands of poor migrant workers die so that they can host World Cup in the middle of the desert.
Please follow the link below to the White House webpage to sign the petition. If we can get 100,000 signatures in 30 days, the Administration will respond to the petition, giving credence to our cause. Even if they don't care to respond, we can then take our message directly to US Soccer. Thanks for your time, and please share this message with anyone you think will sign.
