Roster Perspective - 2012 vs 2013 vs Today

Partway through the off-season, with last year's roster purged, stage one of the RED and a major trade all-but completed, and RED2 and the SuperDuperDraft still to come, I thought it would be worthwhile to assess where the roster stands in comparison to the past two years - one a success beyond expectations and one a failure beyond words - for a little perspective of where the team was, where it stands now, and where we'd like it to be.

Let's start with the 2012 Lineup:

-----------------Pontius--------DeRosario-----------------

--DeLeon------Boskovic-------Kitchen---------Najar---

--Woolard------Jakovic------McDonald------Russell--

---------------------------Hamid--------------------------------

As one poster put it shortly before the first game "This team is awesome. Josh Wolff, Maicon Santos, and Danny Cruz are on our bench. Let that sink in for a second". A tad optimistic, perhaps, but within a year we'd be desperate for that kind of depth.

Which brings us to the 2013 Lineup:

----------------------------Pajoy--------------------------------

-----DeLeon--------DeRosario---------Pontius--------

--------------Saragosa----------Kitchen------------------

------Korb------Jakovic-------White--------Riley--------

---------------------------Hamid--------------------------------

Pretty sure nobody (front office included) looked at that lineup and thought, "This team is awesome". I don't think anyone expected the train-wreck that resulted, but it should have been clear even at the time that this was not a group that had added talent to make the leap from Conference Contender to MLS Cup Winner.

Fast-forward to the post-season. (if only it were that easy...) Just before the RED and after The Cleansing, we were left with:

----------------------------Doyle--------------------------------

------DeLeon-----------Silva------------Pontius----------

------------------Jeffrey--------Kitchen----------------------

------Kemp------Jakovic-------White--------Korb--------

---------------------------Hamid--------------------------------

Some promising young talent, especially if guys like DeLeon and Pontius can regain their previous form, anchored by Kitchen and Hamid, but major concerns up top and at the back. With RED1 and (one assumes) a GAM trade in the bag, we're now looking at:

-------------------------Johnson--------------------------------

------DeLeon------------Silva------------Pontius----------

------------------Jeffrey--------Kitchen-----------------------

------Korb------Jakovic-----Boswell-----Franklin--------

---------------------------Hamid--------------------------------

Seeing that on paper, it would appear that if the questions up top and at the back haven't been answered fully then at least work has been shown. With that, there are some interesting options for the upcoming drafts. Pick up Espindola in RED2, move back to a 4-4-2, and draft Birnbaum to anchor the backline alongside Boswell? Or skip RED2, trust Silva will continue to develop as a playmaker and draft Mullins to pair with EJ? Pick up Heath Pearce, pushing Korb to the bench, and draft Tshuma for an additional spark in midfield?

Based on the roster as it stands today, what direction would you like to see the team take in the upcoming drafts?
