The goal from the USA vs. Antigua & Barbuda match was three points. That's what the United States was able to earn while opening up Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. Sure, the performance left plenty to be desired, but the mission was still accomplished.
The Americans have the same mission again tonight. It won't be as easy, it isn't likely to be pretty, but escaping with three more points against Guatemala would go a long way towards ensuring our place in the next round. Read our USA vs. Guatemala scouting report, and then read on.
Game time: 10:00 PM
TV: The match is only available via pay-per-view, and only on certain cable/satellite providers. Why? The short answer (as with many other things that go wrong in this sport) is to just blame Traffic Sports. Fortunately there are plenty of local bars who will be showing the match. Surely live streaming options will also be available on bootleg websites, but we won't be able to share those with you per SB Nation policy.
Projected starting lineup: Even though the 3-1 win over A&B was underwhelming, Jurgen Klinsmann isn't likely to make very many changes. I do think Klinsmann will quell his urges for further experimentation at the left back position and decide to do the right thing and start Michael Parkhurst in that role, with Steve Cherundolo on the right, and Carlos Bocanegra being joined by Geoff Cameron in the middle. The rest of the lineup will remain as previously used, with Jermaine Jones, Maurice Edu, and Michael Bradley in the midfield, and with Herculez Gomez, Clint Dempsey, and Landon Donovan higher up the field. Tim Howard will of course be in net.
Prediction: Although Guatemala City isn't a fun place to play, the U.S. has had lots of success there recently. And with tonight's opponents already falling to Jamaica last week, the Americans should prevail. I'm predicting a 2-0 win.
What are you drinking? Once again, all USMNT GameThreads will be restricted to American beverages only. And I'm sticking with Yuengling.
