Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

SB Nation's MLS blogs got together today to run our own draft for funsies. The results probably won't reflect real life, but it does give us at least some angle on what teams are prioritizing and where we might see certain players fall.

Drafting for B&RU, I took senior midfielder Nick DeLeon out of Louisville. A versatile attacking midfielder/forward, DeLeon's soccer IQ is well above the average draft pick's, and his skill as a passer and creator is high enough that he can contribute immediately. With United's needs in mind, DeLeon was #3 on my list behind the consensus top two (Akron forward Darren Mattocks and Duke's Andrew Wenger).

I would consider us extremely fortunate to get DeLeon in the real draft, but a rather similar player (Creighton attacker Ethan Finley) dropped all the way to #22. Either of them, along with a handful of others, would make United's draft a successful one.

The real draft is Thursday, January 12th at 12pm EST and will be shown on ESPN2 as well as ESPN3.com.

Ethan Finlay

After he dropped that hat trick at the Combine today, I’d be surprised if he dropped into the second round come Thursday. Up to that point, the two-day lead in goals was split between Chandler Hoffman and Casey Townsend, who have each scored in both games. All three players came in highly rated and are cementing themselves into the first round with their work in Florida this weekend.

Finlay dropping to the second round surprised me more than anything else in the mock draft. I can’t see that happening in real life.

Y'all were forward-happy

It would be greet if DeLeon dropped to #7, but seems unlikely…if for no other reason than Polak seems to have really stunk put the joint this weekend. i hope he didn’t decide to go pro just because I was talking him up. Guess he isn’t ready yet. My guess is DCU ends up with Townsend.

Agree that DeLeon is probably going to go before we get a shot at him

On the plus side, there are a bunch of positionally similar players (Finlay, Garza, Rowe, Cascio, and even the Paraguayan u20 Aldo Paniagua). We need someone that fits that profile to come in and help right away, and this is probably the easiest route to take care of that problem.

If only getting a quality striker internationally were this straightforward.

I think we're justifiably forward happy

This year’s draft class is heavy on forwards and attacking midfielders, where last year’s was stronger on defense. That doesn’t mean that we have to take an attacking talent with our SuperDraft pick, but the fact that the draft pool’s strength aligns with our area of need certainly increases the odds that that’s what happens, and that the best player on the board at 7 will be a forward.

Townsend

With Olsen’s cautious approach to player signings that we’ve seen over the last 12 months, Townsend seems most likely to me too since he’s the player that Olsen would be most familiar with, and is the closest to a sure-thing (in my opinion) at the striker position.

Fills a particular need (or three), to boot

We’ve already got the withdrawn/underneath forward covered twice over, but except for the overachieving-but-still-developing Brettschneider, we don’t have anybody who has demonstrated he can play the target role: give us an aerial presence, hold-up play and goal-scoring. At least at the college level and the Combine, Townsend’s capable of all that and has a good engine – a couple of his team’s goals at the Combine have come directly from turnovers he forced by pressing opposing center-backs. If he’s on the board at 7, I love him as a pick.

Right now, that's my take

Townsend looks like a good pick, so long as he can stay healthy.

I would be fine with Townsend

Certainly addresses a need, and I do think he can contribute right away.

This year's Salgado?

Now, there’s no guarantee that one of the first two picks will be out of the Wild Blue like Salgado was last year (though with Vancouver picking second this year, who’d rule it out?). That said, Jesse Marsch and the Impact apparently haven’t settled on the consensus top two picks, either. ESPN’s Leander Schaerlaecken sent out this tweet, indicating that Montreal still have DeLeon on their (not-so-)shortlist:

The Montreal Impact have narrowed down their choices for No. 1 pick in MLS Draft to: Deleon, Hedges, Mattocks, Rowe, Silva, Wenger.

Then again, this time of year is all about holding your cards tight and stealing value (from the draft pool and from other teams), so take the report of a wide net with the requisite skepticism.

Peronally

I’m glad Benny’s running the show, there’s no one I’d rather have choosing this pick. If last year’s draft class is any indication (not to mention the De Ro trade), we’ll get the right player.

by UnitedDemon on Jan 9, 2012 2:16 PM EST reply actions

That wasn't solely down to Olsen

I’m all for glorifying Benny, but Kasper’s one area of reliable success has been the draft. Throw in our pick of Willis being through Chad Ashton’s contacts at his old job at the University of Denver, and it’s safe to say it’s a collaborative effort rather than one person saving us from a gang of fools.
