Women's World Cup TV Schedule, Time & Prediction - USA Vs. Japan GameThread

Alex Morgan could play an important role off the bench once again for the USWNT in the 2011 Women's World Cup Final

The Women's World Cup Final is just hours away as the USA vs. Japan matchup kicks off this afternoon.

Game Time: 2:45 PM Eastern (8:45 PM local time)

TV: ESPN

Location: Frankfurt, Germany

Projected starting lineup: The United States seem likely to return to the lineup used in their quarterfinal victory over Brazil as Rachel Buehler will reclaim her starting job from Becky Sauerbrunn after missing the semifinal win over France due to a (phony) red card suspension. Buehler will rejoin Ali Krieger, Christie Rampone, and Amy Le Peilbet in defense. The midfield will once again feature Shannon Boxx and Amy Rodriguez on the wings (although Rodriguez hasn't been much of a factor in this World Cup and could be a candidate for replacement), with Carli Lloyd and Lauren Cheney in the middle. Heather O'Reilly and Abby Wambach will be the lead attackers, and to answer the question that nobody is asking, yes Hope Solo will start in goal.

Prediction: The USWNT has never lost to Japan, with a 22-0-3 all-time record, outscoring them 77-13. The U.S. is also undefeated (2-0) in World Cup Finals. So its very possible that this match won't be close. But this is also the most difficult Japanese team that the Americans have ever faced. They've already outlasted Germany in extra time, and beat Sweden, the only team to have a win over the U.S. in this World Cup. But I expect the USA to pull away late after an evenly played first half. Look for Pia Sundhage's substitutions (Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan) to play an important part in a victory once again, and the Americans to capture the 2011 Women's World Cup with a 2-0 win.

If you're looking for a place to chat about the match with other local fans, you've found it. This is your place for pre-game, in-game, and post-game discussion.

USA starting lineup:

Solo; Krieger, Buehler, Rampone, LePeilbet; O’Reilly, Lloyd, Boxx, Rapinoe; Cheney, Wambach

Rapinoe starts ahead of Rodriguez, which isn’t a big surprise since A-Rod has struggled to find results in this tournament, but is a questionable decision if only because Rapinoe has been so good off the bench. Why mess with a good thing?

+1 for Sundhage

The tactical change up by Pia Sundhage has worked. I was a bit nervous too, messing with a good thing, but our possession has completely disrupted Japan’s possession oriented offense.

USA dominating early chances as Rapinoe puts one just wide after a perfect setup from Cheney. They’ll get one of these.

And another chance as Rapinoe rings it off the outside of the near post. She’s been real active, proving that she deserved the start.

Now let’s finish one!

Crossbar!

Goddamn that was a nice looking left-footed shot from Wambach. Hits the underside of the bar and bounces down and out. One inch lower and we’re 1-0.

Nice Chris Pontius impression that.

Japan gets their first legitimate chance of the match after a failed clearance attempt from Le Peilbet. Results in a weak shot right at Solo. That’s not going to beat her.

Great job by Cheney to stay right with the Japanese backline and then get behind them on the Le Peilbet cross, but her header is over the bar once again. The Japan keeper is just 5’-7". Gotta get those on target to test her.

Really should be 2-0 USA or so… Now I’m nervous.

I don’t know, the US worked a ton that half and Japan didn’t do much of anything. The energy level may slowly shift toward Japan as the second begins and carries on.

This is a switch

Up till now in this WC, the US has been lackluster in possession and clinical on the finishes. Now it’s the opposite. We might be wishing for the former before this is done. We look good, but we can’t let Japan stay in the game like this…. need a quick start in the 2nd half.

Confident, but not comfortable.

I feel like there’s at least one goal in the US in the second half, but Japan got dangerous late. Halftime came at a good time.

Another +1 for Sundhage

The tactical change to start the game put us on the front foot from the beginning, and completely took Japan out of their game. Then the halftime substitute scores a goal. I know I’m not the first to say this, but you think Sundhage would be willing to coach the USMNT?
