D.C. United Releases Midfielder Junior Carreiro

D.C. United announced Wednesday afternoon that they had released midfielder Junior Carreiro, the younger brother of the soon-to-be-departing Brazilian midfielder Fred. The club's announcement of Carreiro's release is quoted in full after the jump.

Washington, D.C. (June 29, 2011) - D.C. United announced today the club has waived midfielder Junior Carreiro. Signed in late 2010, the Brazilian midfielder made three League appearances, registering 43 minutes for United in MLS competition during his rookie campaign. The 19-year-old suffered an ankle injury during the 2011 preseason that kept him on the disabled list for most of the current campaign.

"We would like to thank Junior for his contributions to D.C. United and we wish him well in the future," said United General Manager Dave Kasper.

The younger brother of United midfielder Fred, Carreiro officially joined D.C.’s first team on September 15, 2010 after an extended trial that spanned the majority of the 2010 season. The young Brazilian midfielder featured for United as a guest player in international friendlies with El Salvador and Portsmouth that season.

Prior to joining the Black-and-Red, Carreiro spent one season with Náutico of the Brazilian Série A before the club was relegated to the second division in 2009.

Too bad

Its an unfortunate situation to cut a kid loose at 19, but if he wasn’t showing enough progress to be able to contribute at all this season, then its the right call. The USL will be a much better fit for Junior at this point in his career, and if he does well there, he can always come back in the future.
