Ladies' Night: D.C. United Women
Today, D.C. United announced the creation of a new women's team that will begin play in USL's W-League this year based out of the Soccerplex. While this is certainly interesting news, one wonders why the club would make such a move at this time when, by most accounts, the team is tightening its belt as much as possible.
Charles Boehm has the best info on the team so far:
The new women’s team will offer another venue for area prospects, predominantly those playing in college, to develop their talents during the spring and summer collegiate offseason. However, United also sees the venture as a useful entrée to a marketing demographic with which it has enjoyed varying degrees of success over the years: suburban families of elite youth players – especially female ones – who prefer to lend their support to womens’ teams, or find the SoccerPlex a more appealing destination than United’s RFK Stadium home in downtown D.C.
While this all makes sense and more Black Team Soccer is always a good thing, I can't help but wonder if this new venture is intended to make United more appealing to a certain local entertainment mogul who has made a hobby of D.C. women's soccer whom Kevin Payne was rumored to have been courting to join the original Chang-MacFarlane ownership group...

I don't mind this theory one little bit
Especially if it helps get a stadium built in DC. Even more so if it that stadium is filled with professional soccer on twice as many dates as a result of having a pro women’s team.
Either way, I do like this move by United.
