Everton fan coming to DC from Indy, looking for RFK advice

Hey there DC United fans. I'm an Everton fan from Indianapolis, and looks like a friend and I will be making the drive to DC on July 23 for the Everton/DCUnited friendly. I've never been to RFK so I'm looking for some tips on ticket levels to go for, any other tips and tricks to a match at RFK.

First thing I noticed is that Mezzanine tickets are the most expensive, but the seating chart gives the impression that those are higher/further away. Thoughts on whether those are really 'better' than the VIP section?

Thanks, and COYB!

The Mezzanine seats kinda blow

The whole deal with RFK is that it’s old, crumbling, and has no luxury seats. So you’ll be better served if you’re prepared to embrace the grittiness and not try to sit in “fancy” seats when there are none.

As you can see looking at the seating map, most of the seats on the left are given to the supporters groups (Barra Brava, Screaming Eagles, District Ultras, and I think La Norte has relocated there too). This is “the loud side.” It’s also the much better, more energetic side, in my opinion. When we played Portsmouth last year, their supporters came and sat roughly in Section 228. Our supporters groups are incredibly passionate about DC United, but they aren’t violent. Particularly for a friendly with a team we have no history with, it shouldn’t be an issue to sit on that side. In fact, a number of Barra members went over and hung out with the Portsmouth fans last year, and likewise the Portsmouth fans came and hung out with the Barra.

The opposite side is where you should be if you prefer to sit most of the game and take in the game in a quieter manner. You can still see the supporters groups, hear the chants, see the flags and banners, and watch the stands bounce. You just won’t be directly partaking in it.

There’s a chance that the upper level could open up for this game (above the mezzanine seats). Friendlies are a bigger draw typically, and people were in the upper decks for the AC Milan game last year. Everton doesn’t have that level of brand recognition, but it does have Timmy Howard. The bottom level should be full, and if you do get an upper level seat, the views aren’t bad. The upper deck hangs out nearly over the field. You’ll still be close to the action. Rather hilariously, this is where we put traveling fans for MLS games, so the couple dozen that might come out will have the whole run of the upper bowl to themselves.

Anyway, let us know when you come, and be sure to stop by Lot 8 for some tailgating. VAMOS UNITED!

Thanks!

That’s what I figured about the Mezzanine, good to get confirmation.

Still debating VIP side vs the supporters side. Certainly don’t mind standing up for the whole game, and good to know that United supporters won’t mind some opposing fans coming into that side for a friendly.

Looking forward to it, and might just have to take you up on the tailgating offer!

Be careful

You might end up a follower of D.C. United when it’s all said and done. I love my Hotspurs and I know they play at a world class level that MLS doesn’t yet reach but there’s some great advantages to following a domestic team. (games are after 5pm!)

heh we'll see about that.

Haven’t really decided on a MLS team to support. Being from Indy, I’d prefer a team I could get out to see without a 10.5 hour drive. :) so that probably means Chicago or Columbus for me, although I’m holding out hope Indy can get a team someday. Would be first in line for season tickets if that ever happens.

Get in on the Ground Floor with Perry Kitchen

He’s an Indy boy, after all, and captains the US u20s.

Well, pretty close to the ground floor

There were some Akron fans that attended the draft in Baltimore this year, and one of them was vowing to come to DC United games strictly because of Perry Kitchen. He may give a head nod to Chris Korb, too.

Do stop by the tailgates in Lot 8 and have a few beers with the DC fans before the game.

Got my tickets

Will do my best to stop by the tailgating. Sounds like a good time.
