Ochocinco: Good for MLS?
So news just came out that Chad Ochocinco is joining Sporting KC for a trial period next week. Odds are that this is another publicity stunt from Mr. Eightfive. With the NFL lockout nearly inevitable at this point, he has to find new ways to draw attention to himself. He'll pose for some pictures at the practices, and then move on to the next attention-whoring activity.
But what if it doesn't play out like that? What if it turns out he can really play, and makes it onto the pitch in an MLS game? Let's say he even scores a couple goals. Would having Ochocinco on the field reduce the league to a sideshow, or would it fuel more interest in U.S. soccer?
One thing's for sure... He'd come up with some entertaining goal celebrations.

Also, apologies for being slightly off topic for a DCU blog. Just figured I would post here since I’m a United supporter.
Go, fight, and win.
No need to apologize
Anything releated to MLS is welcome here. If you want to talk about it, there’s probably other people who want to talk about it too.

Plus there was a time when Ochocinco considered himself a member of DCU. United sent Ochocinco a customized jersey and he loved it. Its somewhere in the abyss of his twitter page.
I don't think it's bad for the league
It might not have much of an effect on the national level because of how many of these things Ochocinco has done over the years. Hopefully it generates more local interest in the Wizards KC. I think he has too much respect for the game to turn it into a complete joke.
Let's pretend it's DC United we're talking about.
After all, we did see him first – I’m surprised the FO didn’t put a discovery claim on 85 – http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2009/10/ochocincos_dc_united_jersey.html.
I really doubt he will make it past the trial period. Will be fun for everybody on the team, and for Ochocinco, too, but the guy is 33 and hasn’t played this kind of football in so long, it’ll be a real surprise if he manages to make the squad. Most likely scenario is a bunch of photos, maybe a video or three, and some platitudes at the end of the week about what great athletes the Sporks are and how different and difficult soccer is, etc.
All that said, if the NFL season is cancelled for next year, and he’s allowed to play and good enough to, I don’t see why this would be a bad thing. Brings a high-profile American to the sport and allows MLS to piggy-back on the NFL’s misfortune without provoking a backlash.
Given the attacking exodus from the Crew this off-season, I think the most surprising thing with all this is how he didn’t end up in Columbus.

Haha, thanks for looking up that jersey DCU sent him. I remembered seeing that back when the pictures were first posted. Funny how it says that he’ll be playing against KC in the article.
Hey, if the NFL season is canceled and there are enough bored football players, they should form their own squad. They can just roam the country and scrimmage MLS teams. Ochocinco, make it happen.
Go, fight, and win.
I think its awesome
Especially for a team that doesn’t traditionally get high attendance numbers. Even if it is just a stunt, its guaranteed to get some local TV news crews to the practice field. And even if its just temporary, the Sporks will be a topic of conversation around water coolers in Kansas City for a couple weeks. Great creative PR move.

Just saw this on SB Nation's Chiefs blog
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2011/3/16/2054339/chad-ochocinco-kansas-city-soccer-chiefs
That story is full of comments from Chiefs fans, many of who didn’t even know that the Wizards had changed their names to Sporting. Now they know. And it didn’t cost SKC a dime in marketing dollars.

If there's anyone who knows a thing or two about the volatility of a name change
It’s Chad Johnson Ochocinco.

Even if he does make the team/sign a contract...
I’m sure he would void his contract and leave the team to play in the NFL once the lockout is over. And it will be over, eventually. There’s too much money involved.
8-5 strikes me as a person who is about attention and money. Not very much of either in MLS. But in the NFL, yes-iry.
Any publicity, whether good or bad is good for the league.
Anytime people talk about soccer in America besides die hard fans, it’s good for the league and the sport.

Spork Spork Spork
one of the “soccer sux” fans on that Chiefs website was saying that if 85 plays for the Sporks, it will show how bad MLS is… I’m betting the same guy thought it was awesome when Neon Deion and Bo played two sports (if he’s old enough to remember that) If 85 doesn’t make the team (which he probably won’t) will that show how good the league is?
I wasn’t able to respond because my membership in the SB Nation blog won’t be activated for a day…
Don't worry.
I think I covered a few of the points you would have hit on. Typical football fan fodder.

Absolutely nothing to lose on this
Soccer fans often react to attention the way hyper-self-conscious teenagers do (note: not the responses here…seems like everyone has their heads on straight). We need to grow up.
Who are we trying to impress? Football fans? Eurosnobs? Newsflash: Those guys aren’t going to come around any time soon. Who cares what they think?
As Martin states, KC’s market is buzzing with this news. Kansas City is one of the more football-first markets in the country (and that’s saying something in a country where the NFL is utterly dominant just about everywhere). Now, those people are talking about the Sporks.
Sure there are knuckleheads that are just taking ignorant pot shots at MLS, but they’d do that no matter what was happening. There are plenty of casual sports fans that might pay even a small amount of attention to Sporting right now, though, and that makes it totally worthwhile.
To answer the question Alex O asks: No, it would not reduce MLS to a sideshow. It would also not fuel much interest in soccer; a little bit, sure, but not much.
For what it’s worth, I think 85’s only hope of making the team would be as a forward (specifically, a late-game, “we’re desperate and just lumping the ball forward, so go win some headers and throw your weight around” substitute target forward). I doubt he has anywhere near the required finishing ability, touch, passing ability, or soccer IQ to make good runs, but who knows? He’s a tremendous athlete; I bet he’d pick it up faster than people expect. Given a few months of practice time (highly unlikely), I could give him a 10-20% chance of being good enough to play a reserve league game without totally humiliating himself. One of the things about great athletes is that they can pick up new sports much faster than the average person.

From what I’ve read/heard, he grew up playing soccer in Miami but stopped in high school to concentrate on football (sidenote: not a bad career move in hindsight). I don’t think he’s anywhere near the talent level of anyone in the league, but he’s also not starting from complete scratch either. I’d give him the same 10-20% chance of seeing some time in a reserve match, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sporks threw him in a regular season game for 5-10 minutes to boost ticket sales, especially with the new stadium coming this year.
I would be really surprised to see him in a regular season game. If he manages to count as a bona fide trialist, though, I wouldn’t be at all shocked to see him come into a reserve game. Better photo-op than practice, and no points on the line, plus 85 gets to see how he stacks up in game-type action. Everybody wins.

as long as people are talking soccer
The simple fact that non-soccer fans and radio people are talking soccer is enough for me.
