Austin da Luz & Jed Zayner Invited To Compete For D.C. United Roster Spots
As training camp for the 2012 season approaches, dcunited.com provided an update yesterday on the team's roster status. United currently has only 18 players under contract, and will also invite Zayner and da Luz to compete for spots on the roster.
Concealed in this announcement by the process of elimination is the fact that guys like Devon McTavish and Brandon Barklage will apparently NOT be invited to training camp to compete for roster spots. Probably for the best. So long, fellas.

McTavish is retiring from soccer
Like Tino, McTavish is just 27. He’s cited health concerns as his primary reason for calling it quits, and between the Chrohn’s disease and the concussions, it’s not an unexpected move. Still, he was a favorite player of mine and I’m sad to see him go. I wish him the best in his post-soccer career, but between his big heart and gracious personality, I have no doubt he’ll be successful with whatever he does.
I also quite liked Barklage and am sad to see him go. He’s not retiring, so I hope he can catch on with anMLS team somewhere. Part of rooting for a team is to see them win, but another important part is having good men to cheer for. All of the players we let go were good people and had helped us win in the past. I hope Olsen, Kasper, and Payne can restock the roster with more good men who can win.
Barklage probably will retire
Its, like, the thing to do.
