In a surprise twist to the end of the season that none of us saw coming, Charlie Davies has filed a lawsuit against the owner of the D.C. nightclub The Shadow Room, as well as the host of the party that he attended the night that he almost lost his life. We learned of the lawsuit this evening from the excellent reporting of Steve Goff of the Washington Post.
The lawsuit is valued at $20 Million, and while its certainly true that the night of Oct. 12, 2009 cost Davies millions of dollars in potential earnings, the result of lawsuit will come down whether the D.C. Superior Court rules that the nightclub and party host are partially responsible for that night.
That host of the party named in the lawsuit happens to be Red Bull North America, a fact that I find to be totally irrelevant to the DC United vs. New York Red Bulls rivalry, by the way. I just don't see the connection. Like if Luke Rodgers got in a car accident with a Volkswagen and sued the German automaker, would that have anything to do with DCU? C'mon, let's be real.
I'm no legal expert, nor am I one to bring political or ethical ramifications into a sports blog. But I'm shocked, SHOCKED, at the quantities of emotional reactions people are having to this lawsuit on Twitter. Some people take this stuff really seriously. Really personally. And that's cool. Its just not something I expected.
