Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Dueling Analysis from MLS First Kick 2010

The 2010 MLS Season kicked off last night with a game between two of our most hated rivals.  I turned the match off at half time because it was just getting out of hand, but check out these stories from across the SBN network for more:

I wasn’t sure who to cheer for/against in this match. We’ve obviously got the budding rivalry with Seattle, and although we have no direct reason to dislike Philadelphia right now… they’re Philadelphia. Hometown of the douchiest sports fans in North America, and as a Flyers-hating Caps fan, I’m predisposed towards that. So I don’t know. I can imagine Philly becoming our biggest rival if they could be a competitive team, but in their first season, the intensity just hasn’t been there so far.

agreed

I simply hate philly fans. I’m a homer and anything DC is great to me. But this team lacks any hatable players so far. I’m sure that will change and we’ll have some fun with it. I plan on going up there on the 10th and catching that game. Maybe I’ll grab a Jacobson dc united jersey to rub it in a bit. He didn’t look very good anyway.

Fred

Is he hurt or something? If JP and Harkes talked about him, I missed it, and he wasn’t in the 18.

He was serving a red card suspension that carried over from last year. If you’ll remember, he stuck out a chicken-wing defending the near post on a corner near the end of the last game of the year in KC. Ref called it (it was an impressively subtle move by Fred – and one any player in the world would make – just not subtle enough). That led to the PK that drew the game and send United home for the off-season.

Fred will likely make his Philly debut starting against…. our very own DC United. Poetical, right?

Thanks man, forgot about that. Then again, Fred and the word “forget” kinda go hand in glove.

Give Philly time

They’ll give us more reasons to dislike them beyond simply being Philly. You saw their approach to defending Montero. After years of seeing teams like Chicago openly choose “foul” as Plan A to stop Jaime Moreno, I can imagine it will be similar on our visit to the Linc.

The good news is that, with our recent set piece success, Philly will be playing a particularly dangerous game if they go around handing us free kicks in their end.

Right on

I didn’t get to see the whole game but what I did see: Union players “fouling” Sounder players a “few” times.

I would prepare for that if I were Onalfo.

Oh Philly…..

Ljungberg went to the ER

with bone bruising. According to Nowak Freddie got that by being dishonest.

ER?

Ouch. I am assuming he is fine?

Yes, just bone bruising

Doctor said it was equal in damage to an NFL player that gets speared with a helmet.

I still think you guys are missing the point of those comments. They’re a distraction to shield a fragile young group of Philly players. Nowak is willing to be a crazy person in the public’s eye if it’ll keep his team from getting torn up by the press.

Honestly

I don’t understand why the press is being so hard on them, other than the physical play. The send off in the 40th minute was a bit premature (I would have liked to see a stern warning instead of the game-changing outcome), but before that Philly was stringing together some successful runs. They were mostly in control before Seattle’s first goal, and were putting up a decent fight afterward. Playing down a man completely changed the complexion of that game.

I wouldn’t go that far. Philly had a good opening 10 minutes in terms of penning Seattle into their end, but no one was controlling the ball from either team. Seattle had the first coherent movement of either team, and scored. From then on, Philly’s lack of organization showed through. It was hard luck to give up a goal in the small amount of time between the red card and halftime, but I was pretty unimpressed with their team as a whole.

by ChestRockwell on Mar 30, 2010 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say I was impressed

I just don’t think it was the complete beatdown we’ve been hearing about. If Keller doesn’t make that glove save in the 5-6th minute range, it’s 1-0 Philly and a completely different game. Granted, that’s why you want a top-flight keeper back there. Even with the disorganization, the only real chances Seattle had were on the counter attack. There wasn’t a lot of sustained pressure by either side.

Seattle had misses on 2 sitters

and an offside call late in the match that even USSF admits was wrong.

Seattle was unlucky that the match wasn’t a 4 or 5 goal blowout.
