DC United All-Decade Team: Starting Attacking Midfielder

Here we have a generational conflict between two of the greatest players in DC United history.  United has never won anything significant without one of these guys on the field, and each has been instrumental in delivering championships and other trophies to the team.

It's once again time though for me to remind you that we should only be voting on what a player has done for United between the years 2000 and 2009.  Etcheverry's MLS Cup victories in 1996, 1997, and 1999 shouldn't count in this poll, although I wouldn't blame you for voting for him anyway.

What would be surprising to most casual soccer observers is that one of the most recognizable names in US soccer history isn't likely to finish in the top 2 in this poll.  And no, just to be clear, I'm not talking about Dyachenko.

The candidates for central attacking midfield for the DCU All-Decade team are:

Christian Gomez (2004-2007, 2009), 124 matches, 45 goals, 33 assists
Marco Etcheverry (2000-2003), 94 matches, 13 goals, 35 assists
Freddy Adu (2004-2006), 87 matches, 11 goals, 17 assists
Rod Dyachenko (2006-2008), 42 matches, 1 goal, 3 assists

Poll
The starting attacking midfielder on the 2000-2009 DC United All-Decade Team should be:
Christian Gomez
66 votes
Marco Etcheverry
23 votes
Freddy Adu
0 votes
Rod Dyachenko
0 votes

Marco’s gotta be the all-time #1, but within the confines of the last decade, my vote goes to Gomito.

I think that's right....

The version of El Diablo that played in those last couple of years was a shadow of the guy who led the team in the 90s. Gomito was a force of nature for a few years.

Rod Dyachenko is like Stanley Tucci in this contest. You know you’re going to lose, and you’re pretty sure you know who to, but it’s a fun ride nonetheless.

Gomez, rather easily. Etcheverry’s 4 best years were his first 4 seasons, none of which are applicable to this poll.

Freddy

Not that its realistic, but I’d take Freddy back to DCU in a min. (and if he keeps playing on cruddy pitches in Greece, he may just want to come back) His mistakes can be coached and his creativity could really benefit the team.
The amazing thing about Dyachenko is that we traded away a first round pick to get him back…

Would LOVE to have Freddy back

I still feel like his best soccer is ahead of him. With the right coach and the right squad, he could be a quality starter. Not to mention that having him back in DC would definitely increase fan interest in the team (and the blogs that cover it ;)

Freddy Adu?

Freddy Adu? The guy’s like, what, 45? I could hit him…or something along those lines…
