DC United All-Decade Team: Starting Left Defender

And so we move from a position with two excellent candidates that are equally deserving of being on an All-Decade Team, to a position with two candidates who have been little more than fringe starters for their entire MLS careers.

The candidates for this position are solid proof as to how left back has been a weakness for DC United.  After Jeff Agoos occupied that position for all of the 1990s, DC has struggled to find a consistent replacement.  Unfortunately the only year that Agoos played for us this decade was 2000, making him ineligible for this poll.

So please cast your votes below, or boycott in protest if you'd like.

Brandon Prideaux (2002-2006), 116 matches, 0 goals, 0 assists
Marc Burch (2007-2009), 72 matches, 2 goals, 8 assists
Craig Ziadie (2001-2002), 19 matches, 0 goals, 3 assists

I promise to give you a more exciting position next time.

Poll
The starting left defender on the 2000-2009 DC United All-Decade Team should be:
Brandon Prideaux

Marc Burch

It’s gotta be Prideaux, even if he rarely ever played left back in a 442 here. He had virtually no ability to go forward, but always did the defensive part of the job well. He was a starter on the 2004 team, and he was always a good pro. On Hudson’s 2003 team, he was one of the few players that actually met the standard of play you’d expect.

Favorite Prideaux memory: DC was at Dallas, and Prideaux was called for a foul in the box. The ref booked him. However, the ref had already booked Prideaux earlier in the game. Somehow, despite the furious protests of Jason Kreis and other Burn players, this fact evaded the official, and Prideaux stayed on the field. If I’m not mistaken, Kreis also missed the penalty kick, and we got one of our only wins ever at Dallas.

Its got to be Prideaux

because he’s a Husky and a Sounder

I think I just killed his chances.

So then it’s ok if I vote for Burch just because he’s a Terp, right?

Actually there’s a couple different ways that you could look at this poll. If you want to vote for the guy who was the best player in this position over the course of the decade, then that would probably be Prideaux.

Another way to look at it though would be to vote for what player you would actually want starting on the DC United All-Decade Team if they were going to play in a league against the Revolution All-Decade Team or NYRB All-Decade Team, etc. In that case, I might actually prefer Burch because of his crossing ability, and because he wouldn’t be as much of a defensive liability on this team in particular since guys like Nelsen, Pope, and Boswell would be his partners in the middle.

I'll go with Prideax since he won a title with us and he has the most games under his belt.

I like Burch better but not by much. I like that Burch also provides an offensive look which is what you want out of your wing back. Not good to long for the days of Mario Gori huh?
